Environmental Illnesses – Is Where You Are At Making You Sick?

Have you heard the term “environmental illness” before?

Headaches, allergies, or just feeling “off” can all be effects of environmental illnesses. Environmental illnesses are the conditions in your body caused by toxins in your local surroundings. Allergies are a great example. Environmental illnesses can be caused by the things in the air you breathe and the water you drink. They can also be caused by abnormal levels of electromagnetic radiation, lighting, or noise.

Causes of Environmental Illness

There are potential sources for environmental illness right in your own home and work place. Building materials are one source. I read on WebMD that the paper used in the outer layers of drywall actually promote the growth of mold, a very common problem for allergies. New carpet, paint, and materials in new furniture release gases into the air as they dry and age. Fluorescent lights are another problem. They make for a very harsh light that can cause headaches and eyestrain.

Improperly maintained equipment can add even more problems. Another one that WebMD mentions is carbon monoxide from a broken furnace. We’ve all experienced the noise of a broken ballast in fluorescent lights.

Cleaning supplies are another level of pollution in our homes and workplaces. Things that get sprayed in the air are likely to spread beyond the immediate area. Solutions that are applied to counter tops and floors leave a residue that can be picked up later. Laundry detergents and fabric softeners do the same thing to our clothes when we wash them.

My personal favorite is electromagnetic pollution. Sitting here in front of my computer I am potentially exposing myself to a lot of bad EMF. Same goes for the TV and a lot of other appliances. I acquired an EMF meter a few months ago checked out different areas of my house. I was amazed to find that several of the light switches had high EMF even when they were off. They went off the charts when they were turned on.

Solutions to Reduce Environmental Pollution

  • Keep your household equipment in good order to reduce noise problems, gas leaks, and worse EMF problems.
  • Use natural cleaners. They work better than those harsh chemicals a lot of times.
  • Use a good water filter to remove toxins from your water, both the water you drink and that you shower in.
  • Use a good air filter to reduce pollutants in the air. You can also get a smaller unit for your car.
  • Make sure you sit far enough away from your TV and other appliances when they are in operation.
  • Unplug appliances when they aren’t in use.

I have already blogged about Earthing. I watched a video from David Wolfe about grounding yourself to reduce the effects of receiving too much EMF exposure. I’m thinking about trying out one of the pads when I’m using the computer to see what kind of effects I can feel. You can be sure that I will post about it if I do. In the meantime, getting good nutrition and a lot of antioxidants will reduce a lot of those affects too.

I hope that you found this helpful. Write a comment below and tell me about what you are doing to reduce your exposure to environmental toxins. • Thanks for the comment Ragnhild. As we learn ways to reduce our exposure, other people will take notice and businesses will take notice. All it takes is one person at a time.

You are so right Wayne, we definitely have a much higher toxic load due to our environment than we did 30 years ago! It’s something we should be aware of and you make great suggestions. I have both a whole house water filter and a carbon shower filter (you can absorb much more from your skin in the shower than in drinking!). And using green cleaning agents is another great idea, and getting rid of chemicals and solvents that you no longer use.

    Great and valuable post, thanks!

    • Thanks for the comment Vicki. I forgot about the shower and you are right. The warm steam opens our pores and allows more in. Also, if you happen to be on a chlorinated water supply, the chlorine leaves hot water very quickly so you are being gassed every time you take a shower. We have a shower filter too.
