Food as Medicine – Less Expensive and Safer than Drugs

Did you know that food is your best medicine?

We know that if we want to stay healthy then we need to eat right. There are a bunch of other things to do as well to stay healthy, but what you eat is a big part of it. If eating poorly can make us sick then it stands to reason that eating well can make us healthy again.

There are a lot of old ideas about food as good medicine. Chicken soup is still what a lot of people go to when they have a cold. When Winter comes around, some drink more juices to build up the level of Vitamin C in their system to prevent the flu. I often hear women mention drinking cranberry juice to deal with urinary tract infections.

These ideas all come from somewhere back in time when food was all that was available for medicine. These ideas would only stick around if they actually worked to some degree.

In our house, we drink a lot of alkaline water which offsets the damage of an acidic diet. My wife likes green smoothies. She finds them very filling and they are made with real food that has known health benefits. We actually have a book that organizes smoothie recipes based on what conditions they help with. For example, smoothies for diabetes contain bitter melon and smoothies for cancer contain beets.

There are also books and websites that list foods that help with various conditions. Cilantro is good for detoxing from heavy metals. Many mushrooms are great for boosting the immune system to help you be more resistant to disease.

I prefer juicing. I know there are many experts who will say that juicing wastes a lot of the nutritional value of foods. While that may be true, it does make it easier to get a concentrated amount of the liquid nutrients. The best solution will always be to eat the whole food but that isn’t always possible in our fast-paced society. Juicing is a good compromise. It lets you get a lot of nutritional value with in a minimal amount of time.

Another good solution is in good whole food supplements. A quality whole food supplement will still contain a lot of the nutritional value of the original food in a small package that you can carry with you. They are a good alternative for people who don’t have access to a lot of fresh organic produce, the ability to store it, or the time to eat it or juice it.

I have to say that I am not a doctor and I do not prescribe any particular food for any particular condition. If you do have a condition then you should see a doctor. In a life-threatening situation, there isn’t anything better than medical care. Once out of a critical situation, let your doctor know that you want to pursue a more natural course of treatment.
